Mumbai Indians have all but confirmed Rohit Sharma’s stay with the franchise for the 2026 IPL. On the face of it, the franchise’s post on X (formerly Twitter) is cryptic, but it has revealed enough to be taken as a confirmation.

“ Sun will rise tomorrow again  ye toh confirm hai, but at (K)night… muskeel nahi, na mumkin hai (The sun will rise again tomorrow this is confirmed, but at (K)night… it’s not only difficult, it’s impossible,” read the post from MI.

This comes in the wake of the speculations of Rohit leaving the franchise, with Kolkata Knight Riders being one of his possible destinations. The IPL Governing Council hasn’t asked for the list of the retained players from the franchises. After finalising that, the dates for the mini-auction would be decided. But this is the trading window and the teams have been doing their internal planning.

Rohit led MI to the IPL glory five times but ahead of the 2024 edition of the tournament, the franchise stripped him of captaincy, appointing Hardik Pandya as their new skipper. Pandya’s first season as captain was a disaster. In 2025, however, he guided the team to the playoffs, although MI couldn’t get over the line. Before the mega-auction last year, the franchise retained Rohit for Rs 16.3 crore. He is still very much part of the leadership group.

Rohit has become leaner and fitter, and he has returned from the ODIs in Australia bagging the Player of the Series award. His innings of 73 and 121 not out saw him become the No. 1-ranked ODI batsman in the world.
