Playing his 100th Test, Mushfiqur Rahim made the occasion memorable by scoring a century in Dhaka on Thursday, November 20. With this, he became only the 11th batter in the history of Test cricket to score a hundred in their centenary match.

Mushfiqur remained unbeaten on 99 on the opening day of the ongoing first Test against Ireland. The veteran Bangladesh cricketer reached the magical three-figure mark by nudging Jordan Neill off his pads for a single.

As soon as he completed the runs, the small crowd at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium rose to acknowledge the special milestone and erupted in celebration. Mushfiqur’s century in his hundredth Test places him alongside an elite list of players who have achieved a similar feat — including Colin Cowdrey, Javed Miandad, Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla, Joe Root and David Warner — who reached three figures in their respective 100th Tests. He also equalled teammate Mominul Haque’s record for the most Test centuries for Bangladesh.

Coming to the crease after Bangladesh had slipped to 95/3 with the dismissal of skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur stabilised the innings with Mominul, adding 107 runs for the third wicket. After Mominul was dismissed, Mushfiqur forged another century partnership with Litton Das, who top-scored for Bangladesh with 128.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys eventually cut short Mushfiqur’s innings for a 214-ball 106.

The hosts added 166 for the last five wickets to finish on 476 in their first innings.

For Ireland, Andy McBrine did the bulk of the damage, taking six for 109 in the 33.1 overs he bowled.
