Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket, and the search for a new captain is on. Former Indian cricketer and current commentator Navjot Singh Sidhu wants the job to be given to India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. In a conversation with Sports Tak, he said that if it is not possible to hand the captaincy to Bumrah.

He said, “My first option for captaincy is Jasprit Bumrah. If you come out with four pacers in England, firstly, it is cold there. It is not like Australia, where you will sweat and have cramps. His energy will be reserved. Give him 3-4 over spell. There will be relentless pressure like it used to be with West Indies. There will no weight on his back. He will lead by example.”

Jasprit Bumrah was the vice-captain in Australia and even led the team in Rohit’s absence

Shubman Gill is currently the most likely candidate to become the next Test captain. Although Jasprit Bumrah was the vice-captain in Australia and even led the team in Rohit’s absence, his recurring injury concerns make it unlikely that he will be named full-time captain. Along with Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant’s name is also getting considered.

Even Navjot Singh Sindhu also suggested Virat Kohli’s name as the “stop-gap captain”, but earlier today, Kohli announced his Test retirement. Hence, that option is now gone. In a social media post, the former Team India Test skipper shared the news with the fans. Hence, with both Rohit and Virat gone, it will be interesting to see how Team India does in the upcoming tour of England in the five-match Test series under a new leader.
