Gargi Raut at Lord’s
Visiting Lord’s for the first time is something that every cricket fan dreams about, and finally getting to tick it off your bucket list is a privilege like no other. Lord’s is a stadium that is steeped in history. And cricket just feels alive in a way that is hard to describe until you’re there.
Walking up to the famous Grace Gates, I could feel the buzz in the air. Even before you step inside, there’s this sense that you’re about to experience something special. Once through the gates, the view is breathtaking. On one side, the elegant old Pavilion stands tall with its red brick and white balconies, and on the other, the spaceship-like Media Centre watches over the field. The mix of old and new is striking, and it somehow just works.
I visited the ground for the first time two days before the third Test between India and England. India had just pulled off a historic win at Edgbaston, and the buzz around the team was electric. As I entered the ground, the Indian team was in the middle of a practice session. Watching them train on the same turf where legends have walked was surreal. To cover a match at Lord’s, especially right after such a memorable win, made the moment even more special.
Then came the short elevator ride to the press box, somewhere I had only seen on TV. The Lord’s press box has this spaceship-like look from the outside, but once inside, it offers one of the most incredible views in all of cricket. Looking out over the ground from that perch was a moment I won’t forget. It was the kind of view that makes you pause, take a breath, and realise where you are.
Two days ahead of the third Test match between India and England, the museum was shut but in Seb, me and my colleagues found a saviour. We explained we were hoping to do a video story, and he generously offered us a quick tour. What followed felt like a private, behind-the-scenes look at cricketing greatness. Watching cricket history unfold right in front of your eyes through memorabilia gives you chills. And especially seeing the Prudential Cup, a trophy that changed everything for Indian cricket is an experience like never before.
