Sunil Gavaskar was recently in the United States for a fundraiser for the Heart to Heart (H2H) Foundation, where he chairs the Board of Governors. Events were held in Phoenix, Sacramento and Houston, as the ‘Little Master’ continues with his effort to save children from Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs). The Foundation also empowers lives through comprehensive health care for newborns and pregnant women, to prevent infant and maternal mortality.
Gavaskar is 76 years old, and he still works round the clock. “In the USA for Heart to Heart Foundation. God willing, reaching Dubai tomorrow,” he told RevSportz on Saturday, a day prior to the India-Pakistan game at the Asia Cup. On Sunday, he was in the Middle East, doing commentary. His first innings saw him become a cricket legend, arguably India’s greatest-ever batsman. His ongoing second innings has been about seamlessly fitting into the role of a broadcaster and becoming one of the most respected voices in world cricket. The great man calls H2H his “third innings”.
“This is the third innings of my life and the most fulfilling one,” he told this website. And Gavaskar has made an impact. This is about human lives, something way more important than sport. As per the Heart to Heart Foundation website, already 37,600-plus lives have been saved through free heart surgeries. More than 370,000 pregnant mothers and children have been screened, 10,000-plus babies delivered, and over 500,000 paediatric and maternal care consultations have been done.
The motto of the Foundation that supports free paediatric heart surgeries and care for children in need is to save a child’s life today, who “could grow up and save countless more”
