Afghanistan’s all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has opened up about the journey of Afghanistan cricket and the support it has received from India. Nabi highlighted how the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian government played a crucial role in shaping Afghanistan’s growth in international cricket.
Nabi acknowledged the role of the BCCI and the Indian government in the progress of cricket in Afghanistan. “The BCCI helped a lot during that journey. The Indian government built a ground in Kandahar,” Nabi said while speaking to ANI. “Most of the players are also playing in the IPL. Last year, around nine to ten players played in the IPL. They gave us a lot of exposure, and the experience we gained from that has helped us on the national team as well.”
The 40-year-old cricketer, who is currently part of the Dubai Capitals in the ongoing ILT20, also opened up about his role in the team’s progress over the years.
“It’s been a long journey since 2001; now it’s 2025. It has been around 24 years of bringing Afghanistan cricket to this stage, starting from zero. I’m really happy, and I’m still enjoying my cricket as well. There have been a lot of ups and downs along the way, and now Afghanistan cricket is at a high level. We have played in many World Cups, including a semi-final appearance. We will do our best to bring major events to Afghanistan,” he added.
Afghanistan qualified for the semi-finals in the last edition of the T20 World Cup. Nabi is optimistic about performing well in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
“We will try our best in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 because the conditions will suit Afghanistan’s players,” he said. “Also, many players have played numerous IPL matches in these conditions. Hopefully, we will do better than we did at the last World Cup.”
