The much anticipated Neeraj Chopra Classic, originally scheduled for May 24th but postponed indefinitely due to the India-Pakistan conflict, now has a new date. The World Athletics A category event is officially set to take place on July 5th at Bengaluru’s Sri Kanteerava Stadium.
Initially, the event was planned at the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula, Haryana, a place where Neeraj Chopra began his journey. However, during an online press conference on April 21st, Neeraj confirmed that the venue had to be shifted to Bengaluru, as the Panchkula stadium did not meet the infrastructure standards required for a World Athletics A category event.
With the July window now open and most top international javelin throwers expected to be available, anticipation is building for an even more competitive lineup than before. In its earlier schedule, the NC Classic had already attracted some of the world’s best, including Olympic champion Thomas Röhler, world champion Anderson Peters, Julius Yego, Curtis Thompson and Luiz Maurício Dias da Silva. From India, Neeraj Chopra himself with some top athletes like Sachin Yadav, Sahil Silwal, and Kishore Jena were also named.
Now with a revised date and a clear calendar, there is a high probability that even more elite javelin throwers can confirm their participation for the NC Classic.
The NC Classic aims to shine a spotlight on Indian talent by offering them an opportunity to compete with the world’s best on the Indian soil. Organized in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), World Athletics, and JSW, the event is set to become the highest level athletics meet ever held in India.
