Bangladesh and Netherlands will feature in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be played later this year in England, after qualifying for the mega tournament following dominant performances in the qualifying event held in Nepal. This will be the Netherlands’ first appearance in the 20-over ICC tournament. On the other hand, Bangladesh have taken part in every edition since 2014, when they first hosted the showpiece event.
Bangladesh defeated Thailand by 39 runs, while the Netherlands registered a 21-run victory against the USA to secure qualification for the World Cup.
Thailand won the toss and elected to bat first in Mulpani. Juairiya Ferdous’ 56 and Sobhana Mostary’s 59 helped Bangladesh post 165/8 in their 20 overs.
In reply, Thailand’s top-order batters fought hard, but a lack of support from the rest of the line-up meant they could only manage 126/8. Marufa Akter picked up three wickets, while Ritu Moni and Shorna Akter claimed two wickets each.
Netherlands edged past the USA by 21 runs via the DLS method. After opting to bat first, USA couldn’t post a competitive total. Gargi Bhogle (36) and Isani Vaghela (32) were the only batters to offer resistance, helping the USA reach 129/7 in their 20 overs. For the Netherlands, Hannah Landheer finished with figures of 3/30.
In reply, the Dutch openers stitched together a 57-run partnership. They reached 90/2 at the end of the 12th over when rain interrupted play. The Netherlands were later declared winners under the DLS method.
Only four teams from the Super Six will qualify for the main tournament. With Bangladesh and the Netherlands already through, the battle for the remaining two spots is now between the USA, Scotland, Thailand and Ireland.
