Suryakumar Yadav will feature in this IPL, as his franchise, Mumbai Indians, are hopeful of getting his services sooner rather than later. It is learnt that Surya’s next fitness test at the National Cricket Academy could happen on March 28. According to an MI insider, things have been progressing well and the batsman will not miss the IPL.
Surya underwent a fitness test at the NCA on March 19, but he wasn’t given the go-ahead to participate in the IPL. Accordingly, he missed MI’s opening game against Gujarat Titans and he will miss his team’s next fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad as well. The earliest that MI can hope for getting Surya back is on April 1, against Rajasthan Royals.
Surya has been out of action since mid-December after suffering an ankle injury in South Africa. Later he was diagnosed with sports hernia and underwent surgery. The world No. 1 T20I batsman has been doing his rehab at the NCA since.
Earlier, at MI’s pre-IPL press conference, the team’s head coach Mark Boucher had expressed concerns over Surya’s availability for the tournament. “We are awaiting updates on Suryakumar from the BCCI. We have always been under a cloud of fitness issues, but we have a world-class medical team. We may lose one or two in terms of fitness but we have to move on as is sport,” he had said.
Things have progressed in a positive direction in the last few days and although Surya hasn’t yet shared any of his batting videos on social media, it is learnt that he is steadily moving towards full fitness.
