Nicholas Pooran, who recently retired from all formats of international cricket, has been appointed the new captain of MI New York for the 2025 Major League Cricket (MLC) season. He replaces his former West Indies teammate, Kieron Pollard.
Pooran played an important role in MI New York’s success during the inaugural MLC season in 2023. His unbeaten 137 off just 55 balls in the final against the Seattle Orcas helped the team lift the trophy. He also emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with 388 runs — 124 runs clear of second-placed Quinton de Kock. Pooran’s association with the MI franchise dates back to 2017 and also includes a stint with MI Emirates in the UAE’s ILT20.
The MLC 2025 season has witnessed multiple captaincy changes. Glenn Maxwell, who recently stepped away from ODI cricket to focus on T20s, has taken over the captaincy of Washington Freedom from Steven Smith. Freedom are the defending champions, having defeated the San Francisco Unicorns in the 2024 final.
Corey Anderson continues as captain of the San Francisco Unicorns, making him the only USA-based captain in the league. Heinrich Klaasen has also retained his role as the captain of the Seattle Orcas. Meanwhile, no official announcements have been made regarding the leadership roles of Sunil Narine (Los Angeles Knight Riders) and Faf du Plessis (Texas Super Kings).
The new season begins on 13 June with a high-octane clash between Washington Freedom and the San Francisco Unicorns in Oakland. The final will be held on 12 July.
