Trinbago Knight Riders have appointed Nicholas Pooran as captain for the upcoming season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He will succeed Kieron Pollard, who brings an end to his six-year tenure as captain.
With CPL 2025 just around the corner, TKR have made this decision with a long-term plan in mind. Having retired from international cricket and the IPL, Pollard is no longer a regular in franchise cricket. Although he will take part as a player in the upcoming season, he is unlikely to be around for much longer.
Pooran, his successor, brings a wealth of T20 experience—particularly in the CPL, where he has played 103 matches, amassing 2,202 runs at an average of 23.9 and an impressive strike rate of 148.43. These credentials make him one of the most explosive batters in the tournament. At 29, with both form and experience on his side, Pooran also benefits from having age on his side. Having recently stepped away from international cricket, the Trinidadian now plays franchise cricket throughout the year.
Speaking about his appointment, Pooran said:
“It means a lot, first and foremost, to represent Trinbago Knight Riders. It is a privilege to have the opportunity to lead this franchise. I want to give it my best shot, and hopefully make as many correct decisions as I can. It’s a responsibility that has been passed down from (Dwayne) Bravo (2013–2019) to Pollard (2019–2024), and now to me. For me, the most satisfying thing is that Pollard is still playing, and Sunil (Narine) and Andre (Russell) are here too. That’s a lot of experience I can bank on. To lead them on the field—it means a lot to me.”
Pollard, speaking on Pooran’s appointment, said:
“With Bravo coming on board this year as the new head coach, we felt this was the right time to bring in a new captain. Pooran is homegrown, and I believe this is the right opportunity for him.”
Recently, TKR announced that former captain Dwayne Bravo has been named the new head coach. The T20 legend takes over from Phil Simmons, who is now the head coach of Bangladesh’s men’s team.
“He’s the right choice, and this is the right time,” said Bravo. “Just like I did six years ago, Pollard has now decided to hand over the leadership to someone who we believe is on the verge of becoming one of the greatest T20 players.”
The 13th edition of the CPL kicks off on 14 August, with TKR set to open their campaign against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at Warner Park on 17 August.
