The Northern Superchargers will now be known as Sunrisers Leeds. This change will mark a new chapter for the Leeds-based franchise ahead of the 2026 Hundred season. The Indian media – Sun Group – acquired the franchise via a £100 million deal. The Sun Group is also the owner of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in SA20.
The Yorkshire County Cricket Club has sold its 51% share in the team, with the England and Wales Cricket Board selling 49% of its share, which provides the Sun Group full ownership.
Yorkshire’s chief executive Sanjay Patel had earlier shared his views about the deal. “The deal puts the club in a strong financial position, which has been far from the case for many years here, and we can start looking towards a very bright future.”
The name Sunrisers Leeds has already been registered in the United Kingdom. The team is expected to get new branding and a new look. Reports also suggest that Daniel Vettori, who is currently the coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad, may become the new head coach after Andrew Flintoff’s exit.
The women’s team recently won the Hundred title, while the men’s squad reached the Eliminator’s stage. Two more teams are expected to get a new name. Manchester Originals are expected to become Manchester Super Giants and Oval Invincibles may be renamed as MI London.
The ECB had announced that Hundred 2026 will introduce a player auction system. The changes aim for higher salaries, and more overseas talents, which in turn promises a competitive and exciting season.
