After another day of English dominance, this time fuelled by Joe Root’s sublime 150 and a controlled innings from Ollie Pope himself. England look poised to push India out of the series. Pope faced the media with calm clarity, praising teammates, admitting physical tolls, and most crucially, reflecting on how this team is evolving.
Bazball 2.0? Pope Says Brains Now Lead the Baz
“We’ve had to play with our brains to get to 2-1,” Pope said. “Had we not, we wouldn’t be here.” While Bazball is still in the DNA, Pope pointed out how tactical shifts during play, absorbing pressure, waiting for the new ball, and then pushing forward are all signs of a more mature side.
Root’s 150: Flawless, Quiet, and Inevitable
“It was exactly what we needed,” Pope said of Root’s innings. “Flawless, didn’t give a chance, and just the way he trains and carries himself, it’s a joy to watch.” Pope confirmed Root isn’t one to make a fuss about landmarks but added, “I’m sure he knew he became the second-highest Test run scorer. He’ll enjoy it quietly.”
Ben Stokes: All Heart, All Cramp
Stokes left the field briefly, triggering concern. “He cramped in one leg, then it spread. The amount he’s bowled this series, he’s pushed himself massively,” Pope said. As vice-captain, he admitted keeping Stokes from overdoing it is tough: “Sometimes he gets that crazy look… and there’s no talking him out of it.”
Kudos for Bumrah, But England Are Ready
On India’s bowling spearhead, Pope offered respect. “You’ve got to stay focused against someone like Bumrah. He’s steamed in all series. Hopefully, we can score a few more off him.”
England, though, seem to have all the answers. The scary part for India? They might still be getting better.
