Mitchell Marsh’s appointment as Australia’s captain for this year’s ICC T20 World Cup appears to be all but confirmed, as national coach and selector Andrew McDonald has asserted that “all roads will lead to Mitch.”
This decision comes as Pat Cummins, Australia’s Test and ODI captain, has shown no interest in taking up the T20I captaincy. Cummins recently stated that he enjoys playing T20I cricket without the added responsibility of captaincy, evident in the series against New Zealand.
Marsh is expected to lead a squad that may include Cummins, skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024.
McDonald, part of the selection panel alongside George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide, is confident that Marsh will do well as a leader in the mega event. “I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas. We’re happy and comfortable with the way he’s been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he’s the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course.”
This marks a significant moment for Marsh, whose international resurgence began during Australia’s triumph at the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, where he was named player of the match in the final.
He has since then become a key player in white-ball cricket and has also made a significant impact in the Test arena, particularly during the 2023 Ashes series. Marsh’s exceptional all-round abilities earned him the highest individual honour in Australian cricket — Allan Border Medal.
Under Marsh’s leadership, Australia has achieved success in T20I series against South Africa, West Indies, and New Zealand over the past year. His track record as a leader, combined with his stellar performances on the field, makes him a natural choice to lead Australia in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
