Kane Williamson, New Zealand’s former captain, had a disappointing return to international cricket as he registered his first-ever golden duck in ODIs, in the first game of the series against England in Mount Maunganui. This match marked his comeback to international cricket after more than seven months away from the national team.
Williamson came out to bat at number three, but his duration at the crease ended almost instantly. He edged his first delivery from Brydon Carse that straightened off the deck to Jos Buttler.
This match was Williamson’s first appearance for New Zealand since the 2025 Champions Trophy final against India, where he scored only 11 runs. The 35-year-old is currently on a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket. Williamson skipped several Test and limited-overs series earlier this year to play domestic competitions in England.
WIlliamon’s dismissal also left New Zealand in early trouble at 12 runs for 2 wickets while chasing England’s target of 224 runs. Daryl Mitchell then played a crucial innings of 78 not out for the Blackcaps which helped them reach the target in 36.4 overs. Michael Bracewell also added 51 runs. For England, Carse was the key bowler as he took three crucial wickets which destroyed the top order of New Zealand.
Earlier, England had recovered from a shaky start of 33 runs for five wickets due to Harry Brook’s brilliant knock of 135 runs, which guided them to a total of 223 runs.
The second ODI between New Zealand and England is scheduled for October 29 in Hamilton.
