In a vibrant celebration of culture and fitness, the Sports and Youth Services Department of Odisha organised a unique “Aitihya Ganadouda” (Heritage Marathon) on April 5, 2025, as part of the ongoing ‘Odia Pakhya’ festivities. The marathon route stretched from the historic Khandagiri Caves to Kalinga Studio Square in Bhubaneswar, drawing a lively crowd that included youth, cultural enthusiasts, and several notable personalities.

Odisha’s Minister for Higher Education, Sports & Youth Services and Odia Language, Literature & Culture, Suryabanshi Suraj, flagged off the event alongside former track and field athlete Anuradha Biswal and acclaimed cyclist Minati Mohapatra. The occasion was made even more festive with cultural performances and strong public participation, reflecting both physical energy and cultural pride.

Minister Suryabanshi Suraj emphasized the dual purpose of the event: to highlight Odisha’s rich heritage and promote the Fit India Movement envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated that the heritage marathon, held at key cultural sites across the state, is part of an initiative to encourage fitness while raising awareness about preserving and maintaining Odisha’s historical landmarks.

“Our goal is to inspire all 4.5 crore Odias to embrace fitness in their everyday routines. Events like these allow us to celebrate our roots while also contributing to a healthier society,” said the Minister.

Marking the fifth day of the 14-day Odia Pakhya celebration, the marathon stood out not just as a physical challenge but as a moving homage to Odisha’s heritage. The festive atmosphere was enriched by traditional food, local performances, and social engagement, with many participants sharing moments from the scenic event online through the official Odia Pakhya portal.

Distinguished attendees included Ekamra MLA Babu Singh, senior politician Priyadarshi Mishra, Shri Jagannath Pradhan, and popular Odia actor Sabyasachi Mishra, all of whom added their support and energy to the celebration.

The Odisha government recently launched the statewide ‘Odia Pakhya’ celebration, running from April 1 (Odisha Day) to April 14 (Odia New Year). This two-week event aims to spotlight Odia language, literature, and culture through community-driven programs conducted at all administrative levels across the state.
