Odisha FC has sought an extension until Monday to decide on its participation in the 2025–26 Indian Super League (ISL) season after failing to meet the 5 pm deadline on Friday set by the All-India Football Federation (AIFF). At least five other clubs, including FC Goa, Chennaiyin FC, Bengaluru FC, Mumbai FC and Kerala Blasters, have also raised concerns regarding participation fees, relegation and stadium-related costs. The clubs collectively demanded the waiver of the ₹1 crore franchise (participation) fee for the season, especially as they would be contributing directly to the league’s operational expenses.
The clubs have also sought clarity and assurances regarding the implementation of promotion and relegation. The ISL was a closed league, but a roadmap agreed upon by stakeholders intended to introduce relegation from the 2024-25 season. However, for the current delayed season, clubs were initially told there would be no relegation, which caused some contention.
The clubs also want clarity on stadium costs and have requested government support to minimize infrastructure-related costs, including waiving or containing the high rental fees for stadiums.
Once the AIFF receives confirmation from all 14 clubs, it will begin work on other operational details, including the league’s schedule, in consultation with the teams. Notably, Odisha FC did not participate in the Durand Cup and the Super Cup earlier this year due to financial constraint and the club had to temporarily suspend its operations.
On Tuesday, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced that the ISL, which had been on hold due to the absence of a commercial partner, will commence on February 14 with all 14 clubs taking part.
The top-tier ISL will feature 91 matches on a single-leg home-and-away basis if Odisha FC participates, with each team playing 13 matches. If Odisha FC withdraws, the league will consist of 78 matches, with each team playing 12 games.
The federation is expected to issue a new Request for Proposal (RFP) for both the short-term (2025–26 season) and long-term (20 years starting from 2026–27) commercial rights. The AIFF plans to onboard a commercial partner for the 2025–26 ISL season by January 31.
