With Rugby Sevens gaining traction globally since its Olympic debut in 2016, India is finally stepping into the fast-paced format—and making waves. The ongoing GMR Rugby Premier League (RPL) has not only introduced elite-level sevens rugby to Indian players but has also caught the attention of global stars.

International Olympians participating in the league see immense potential in India. Kenyan star Kevin Wekesa, playing for Hyderabad Heroes, praised the Indian talent and predicted Olympic appearances in the near future. “Leagues like GMR RPL are the future of sevens,” he said.

Uganda’s Philip Wokorach, now with Bengaluru Bravehearts, lauded the league’s initiative of bringing schoolchildren to the stadiums. “That’s where the foundation starts,” he said.
