September 19 is an unforgettable dayfor cricket fans. Eighteen years ago in Durban, Yuvraj Singh turned a regular night into history, when he smashed six sixes in one over and established himself as a T20 legend. It is the game fans watch and re–watch.
The iconic moment was from the 2007 T20 World Cup match between India and England. India got a good start, with a 136–run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag. After Robin Uthappa lost his wicket, Yuvraj came in to bat.
He had an instant argument with Andrew Flintoff, which made him angry and ready for a memorable attack.
Stuart Broad was bowling the 19th over and Yuvraj started hitting with full power. All six balls went for the maximum — in different directions. Over long-on, deep square–leg, deep mid–wicket, even over the covers. Each shot he smashed was bigger than the last one. He reached his half–century in just 12 balls, which was the fastest T20 half-century during that time, and India scored a total of 218 runs.
England could do nothing to his aggressive hitting and only watch as history was made.
India won that match by 18 runs and later they won the first-ever T20 World Cup, a victory that changed Indian cricket. Yuvraj’s six sixes off Broad became the tournament’s most famous moment.
In that tournament, he scored 148 runs at a strike rate of 194.73, with an average of 29.60 and a top score of 70. Even after 18 years, those sixes bring strong emotions and thrill to the fans.
