Former India head coach Ravi Shastri says Virat Kohli’s batting and leadership for Team India is worthy of every plaudits. With Shastri, Kohli formed a dominating partnership of coach and captain, taking India towards the road to success, especially in Test cricket.
While speaking to Sky Sports Cricket, Shastri praised Kohli’s leadership skills since taking over the baton from MS Dhoni. “It was great. He (Kohli) was the one man I identified who will lead the team and I wanted him to lead the team,” Shastri said. “Once I took over the job and once Dhoni had finished and he did a magnificent job.”
The former Indian head coach credited Kohli for taking India to number one ranking in Tests under his captaincy in addition to his batting domination.
“First, his skills as a batter, his ability to dominate, be in the face, play hard, but play fair and wanting to win and take the game forward” Shastri remarked. “I would say Kohli, the batter in his pomp, was unbelievable because in those five years, when India were No. 1 in the red ball format, some of the innings he played in Australia, South Africa, England, across formats were unreal”.
After Dhoni, Kohli has left behind a legacy as one of the finest captains and batters in Indian cricket. Kohli had retired from the Test format ahead of the five-match Test series against England.
