India wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel has said that he values the team’s success more than his personal milestones.
“Honestly, earlier it did matter to me whether my score was 100 or 150. But now I understand that the team’s victory is more important. In first-class cricket, I have seven-eight (he has four) scores in the 90s, which could have been centuries,” Jurel told reporters.
He also gave an example to justify his point.
“One of them was in the Ranchi Test where I became Player of the Match and the team won the match. Cricket is a team game, and we play cricket so that the team wins. Now I think more about the team’s win than about my scores,” he added.
In that Ranchi Test against England, Jurel played a crucial knock of 90 in the first innings to help India reach 307 in reply to England’s 353. In the second innings, he scored an unbeaten 39 to guide India to victory.
The 24-year-old right-hander also impressed while playing for India A, scoring a brilliant 140 against Australia A in the unofficial Test in Lucknow. Jurel said that he wants to stay in the present and focus only on the immediate task.
“I take it one match at a time, and don’t think too far ahead. Right now, I played a match today, and three days later, the next match is there. So, I am only thinking about the next match,” Jurel said.
Currently, Jurel is India’s second-choice wicketkeeper in Tests after Rishabh Pant. He made his debut during the England series in Rajkot in 2024, and since then has featured in five matches, scoring 255 runs at an average of 36.42.
