Oscar Piastri’s journey to McLaren came after a contentious, yet hilarious-in-hindsight-exit from Alpine. The Australian made headlines by publicly dismissing his promotion in the French team before joining McLaren. However, in his very first season in Formula 1, the rookie has proven that his skills are not to be overlooked. Now, in his second year in F1, heading into the Mexican Grand Prix, Piastri is once again addressing rumours linking him to RedBull.
Earlier in the week, RedBull’s senior advisor, Helmut Marko, who is notorious for dropping bombshells to the media, hinted that Mark Webber, Piastri’s manager and former RB driver, was interested in roping Piastri.
“Mark Webber is intensively seeking conversation,” Marko remarked to F1-Insider.com
The statement added fuel to the fire and sparked excitement among fans about Piastri’s possible future with the Milton Keynes team.
However, the Australian driver was quick to shut down any such rumours. When asked about the speculations linking him to RedBull, Piastri set the record straight:
“I think we all know that Helmut says a lot of things in the press,” he remarked with a grin. “As far as I’m aware, there’s no truth to it. I’m very, very happy where I am.” said Piastri in a media briefing ahead of the Mexican GP
He also went on to emphasise his commitment and gratitude to McLaren. “They gave me my opportunity in F1. At the moment, in the standings, we’re in a very happy place, so I am more than happy with where I am at the moment,” Piastri said.
The 23 year-old, who quickly became a fan favourite for his humour and quick wit off the track and his never-back-down attitude behind the wheel, has proven that he deserves a seat on the grid time and again. He has been a refreshing addition to the paddock–especially his grounded and humorous personality, while his fierce nature on track has made for a stirring rivalry with his teammate Lando Norris.
As for McLaren, they currently lead the Constructors Championship with 544 points after the US Grand Prix. Oscar, alongside Norris, who is set to race for the team till the end of 2026, will now focus on maintaining a solid lead over RedBull (504 points), and Ferrari close behind with 496 points. McLaren’s consistent podiums and strong finishes have propelled them into the lead, thanks to standout performances by both Piastri and Norris throughout the season.
