Subrata Paul, famously known as “Spiderman,” is one of India’s most reliable goalkeepers. His nickname, given by the Korean media after his outstanding performance against South Korea in the 2011 Asian Cup, is well-deserved. In Bengal, however, we affectionately call him “Mishtu Da.”
With Bengal’s iconic stadium, Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, set to host India’s must-win World Cup Qualifiers fixture against Kuwait, which will also mark the last dance of our talismanic striker, Sunil Chhetri, we at RevSportz felt that no one could pay a better tribute to the legend than Paul, who shared the field with him in the national team and at various clubs.
When I called ‘Mishtu Da’, he regretted that he couldn’t do a physical interview due to his busy schedule. However, he generously offered to answer questions over the phone. Elated and without wasting a moment, I seized the opportunity to start our conversation. Here’s how the conversation unfolded with Paul, a legend in his own right and a keen observer of Sunil Chhetri.
Rahul: How would you describe Chhetri as a teammate on and off the field?
Subrata Paul: On the field, he is a skilled player, a great finisher, and a very intelligent player. He always tries to be in the best physical condition. He has excellent scoring ability and the knack for being in the right place at the right time. He is always looking to score goals and gives his maximum for the team. He has an exceptional ability to motivate teammates and encourage them to play at their peak. Off the field, he is humble, friendly, and kind. He mingled with all and was respected by all. A true team player, always happy for the team’s success.
Rahul: Can you share any memorable moments or matches where you and Chhetri both made significant contributions?
Subrata Paul: We have played many matches together for the country and clubs, learning a lot from each other and helping each other to progress. It is difficult to single out any one match or moment, because every moment spent together on the training ground, in matches, in the dressing room, in hotel rooms, and at the dining table was special.
Rahul: In your experience, was there any difference in Chhetri’s approach or performance when playing for the national team, compared to playing for his club?
Subrata Paul: We have played together for both clubs and the national team. At the club level, we played together for East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mumbai City FC. In the national team, we have played many matches for India. There was no difference between Sunil’s approach in club and national team games. He was always the same energetic and skilled player.
Rahul: As a goalkeeper, your role was to prevent goals while Chhetri’s was to score them. How did this dynamic play out in training and matches?
Subrata Paul: As a goalkeeper, my job was to stop goals, and Sunil’s job was to score them. In practice, we would play against each other and help each other improve. In matches, we depended on each other and worked together to ensure victory for the team.
Rahul: Can you recall any special moments or anecdotes involving Sunil that stand out to you?
Subrata Paul: I have many unforgettable moments with Sunil. Every moment is special to me as we have learned so much together, helped each other grow, and developed a deep friendship. The time we spent on the training ground, the excitement of the matches, the laughter in the dressing room, the deep discussions in hotel rooms, and the light meals at the dining table—every moment is etched in my mind.
Rahul: How was your personal bonding with Sunil? Did he have any nicknames for you, like “Spiderman” or “Mishtu Da”?
Subrata Paul: My friendship with Sunil during his playing career is deep and lasting. We understood each other very well and were always there for each other. Sunil used to call me by a special nickname that no one else in the team called me. This name is a special symbol of our friendship. We shared everything with each other and always supported each other through good and bad times. I am sure our friendship will stand the test of life.
Rahul: In your opinion, who could potentially replace Chhetri in the future?
Subrata Paul: Chhetri is a unique player, distinguished by his skill, tenacity, and leadership qualities. The criteria he sets are difficult to fully meet. However, India has many talented young players who can play important roles for the country in the future. I believe Sunil’s extraordinary achievements will inspire the next generation and take Indian football to greater heights.
Rahul: Are there any particular traits or qualities of Chhetri that you admire or find inspiring?
Subrata Paul: Chhetri is not only an amazing player but also an inspiration. He has earned the admiration and respect of countless people across India. His perseverance, tenacity, and patriotism are exemplary. He is an icon for Indian football and will always be our source of pride.
Rahul: Do you want to share any special message for him?
Subrata Paul: I respect Sunil’s decision to retire from international football. I understand it’s been a very tough call. We have been on the same side of the field numerous times, learning and pushing each other. He has been an inspiration and has set the standards exceptionally high. Good luck, my friend, for your life beyond the field. I look forward to walking it together.
