The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan has taken the initiative to conduct a comprehensive review of the security situation concerning the participation of the Pakistan Men’s team in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023, which is scheduled to be held in India. This review comes at a time of escalating tensions and strained relations between the two neighbouring countries due to a venue dispute for the Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been hesitant in providing a clear commitment regarding the team’s travel to India for the  tournament. This public reaction from the Pakistani government marks the first time they have addressed the matter. The uncertainty from Pakistan has even led to a delay in the announcement of the World Cup schedule, despite the tournament being just over three months away.

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, has revealed that the purpose of the review is to evaluate the potential threats and risks that the Men in Green may face in the neighbouring country. After a thorough examination of the situation, the Ministry will communicate its decision to the PCB in the upcoming days regarding whether the team will be sent to participate in the World Cup or not.

“Regarding cricket, Pakistan is of the view that politics should not be mixed with sports. India’s policy of not playing cricket in Pakistan is disappointing. We are observing and evaluating all aspects relating to our participation in the World Cup including the security situation for Pakistani cricketers and we will offer our views to PCB in due course,” Zahra Baloch said.
