The Sonnet Cricket Club, which has been instrumental in shaping the careers of several star cricketers, including Rishabh Pant, Ayush Badoni and Hrithik Shokeen, has been served an eviction notice. Since 2000, it had been operating on the grounds of Delhi University’s Sri Venkateswara College. The club’s coach had revealed that the college no longer wanted the club on its premises.

Pant has been out of action for several months due to injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022. As a result, he has missed the entire IPL season, and will play no part in the ICC World Cup later this year.

Pant expressed his sadness over his club’s travails on Twitter. “It is so disheartening to see my club that has produced so many international cricketers over the years and continues to do so has been served an eviction notice,” he said. “It played a major role in shaping my cricketing career and many more like me. This is like a home for all of us.

“We have always followed the rules set by the college. I would like to request the governing bodies of Venkateshwara College to reconsider this as Sonnet club is not just a club, it’s like a heritage institution and a home for so many budding cricketers.”
