Pataudi name to remain alongside Sachin and Anderson for India-England trophy

There has always been much talk about the renaming of the Pataudi Trophy. A number of former cricketers and public intellectuals have spoken against the idea and said it is a sign of disrespect to the Pataudi family.

From what I have heard, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) certainly want the Pataudi name to be associated with the series, while also honouring James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar by renaming the trophy after them.

“It is not true at all that the Pataudi legacy is being disrespected,” said a source. “While Iftikar Ali Khan Pataudi played for both countries, Tiger Pataudi was one of India’s great captains. There will never be any disrespect shown to him. What is being done is a mesh of the past and the present. Sachin and Anderson are two of the greatest cricketers ever and while the Pataudi legacy will be associated with the series, the trophy will be named after two modern legends. This way, the past comes together with the present. This will help inspire the future,” the source added.

When will this be made public and when will things be made clear? My understanding is by the next few days, and during the World Test Championship final from June 11-15, an announcement will be made. It is now certain that Pataudi’s name will continue to be associated with the series, while Sachin and Anderson will also be a part of it going forward.
