PBKS and RR – IPL 2023 Qualification Scenarios

Written by Vaibhav Tripathi

The stage is set for an eagerly anticipated showdown between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on May 19th. This highly significant encounter serves as the final league game for both teams, leaving everything on the line. The main differentiating factor between RR and PBKS is their Net Run Rate (NRR), with both teams on 12 points. Presently, RR holds the 6th position with an NRR of +0.140, while the PBKS stands 8th with an NRR of -0.308.

Following Royal Challengers Bangalore’s triumph over the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, PBKS face a formidable challenge of securing a commanding victory in order to keep their hopes alive for a spot in the playoffs. If the PBKS manage to score 180 runs with the bat, they would need to win by a margin of 126 runs to surpass Royal Challengers Bangalore’s NRR. Similarly, if they were to chase down 180 runs, they would have to do so in a mere 6.4 overs. PBKS are undoubtedly faced with an uphill battle.

To give themselves a fighting chance of progressing to the playoffs, PBKS must take an aggressive batting approach and strive for a monumental total of 200+ runs. Alternatively, they can aim to closely match RCB’s run rate and hope for Gujarat Titans to defeat RCB in their final league match, resulting in a decrease in RCB’s NRR below that of the PBKS.

The contest for playoffs spots is very tight, as Mumbai Indians have 14 points. Although their NRR is currently below that of RCB and RR. Hence, the equation for RR is relatively simpler. For a start, they must secure a victory against PBKS at any cost and rely on RCB and MI losing their respective matches. Although RR’s NRR is better than that of the MI, it falls short in comparison to RCB’s.

The 2022 runners-up suffered a significant blow to their NRR following a crushing 112-run defeat against RCB. RR needs to secure a victory by a margin of approximately 12 runs if they manage to score 180, in order to surpass RCB’s NRR. Having won only twice in their last 8 IPL matches this season, losing their final match is simply not an option for the RR.

Defeat for either team will bring an end to their journey in this year’s tournament. In the event of a match abandonment, both teams will be eliminated. Hence, by the conclusion of the day’s play, at least one team will face elimination.
