
The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, hosted the ICC Women’s World Cup-winning team at his residence on Lok Kalyan Marg on Wednesday, November 5. He congratulated the Indian team on their historic victory and praised them for their brilliant comeback in the tournament after a series of defeats in the group stages.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who had been part of the losing team in 2017, recalled their meeting with the Prime Minister at that time, when they did not have the trophy. She was delighted to meet him with the trophy this time.
India’s vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana, who was the team’s leading run-scorer in the tournament, said that the Prime Minister is an inspiration to all of them. Deepti Sharma, who was named Player of the Tournament, recalled that PM Modi had encouraged them to keep working hard during their 2017 meeting. Deepti also mentioned that the tattoo of Lord Hanuman on her arm gives her strength.
The Prime Minister also asked how Harmanpreet managed to pocket the ball after the final match, to which she replied that it had come to her by luck, and she kept it. PM Modi also discussed Amanjot Kaur’s famous catch to dismiss Laura Wolvaardt, which she completed after fumbling. Kranti Gaud spoke about her brother being a big fan of the Prime Minister, to which he extended an open invitation to meet them.
PM Modi encouraged the players to promote the message of Fit India across the country and highlighted the importance of fitness in combating obesity. He urged them to visit their schools to inspire the younger generation.
