Uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh is hopeful of a national call-up following a Ricky Ponting-inspired run with the bat in IPL 2025.

Opening the batting for Punjab Kings, Prabhsimran amassed 549 runs in 17 matches, including four half-centuries, a highest score of 91, and an impressive strike rate of 160.53. The right-hander, who was one of two players retained by PBKS, formed a formidable opening partnership with Priyansh Arya. Their consistent performances were one of the key reasons behind PBKS’ successful run to the final.

Not only did Prabhsimran excel with the bat, he was also safe behind the stumps until Josh Inglis took over the wicketkeeping duties in the second half of the tournament.

Currently representing Punjab in the Buchi Babu Tournament, Prabhsimran emphasised the importance of “clarity” as he reflected on what fuelled his impressive IPL season.

“I feel most of the credit goes to Ricky Ponting. He gave me clarity,” said Prabhsimran Singh. “Ahead of the season, when a youngster has that clarity, he can focus completely on enhancing his game. This year, I felt my consistency was better. In previous years, I would play well but get out on 30 or 35. I worked a lot on that this year. I tried to take on more responsibility, and I got the results.”

The top-order batter now hopes to build on his IPL exploits and earn a call-up to the national side.

“Every player, when he starts playing cricket, dreams of playing for India. For now, let’s see – I’m just waiting. I don’t think too much about it. I’m just focusing on my game, and if I continue to perform, hopefully God will give me an opportunity soon,” he added.
