You will reading this piece just as I land in Kolkata after a long tour of the UK. And, may I say, it was a fantastic work trip with some incredible memories standing out. India winning at The Oval in what will rank as one of the great Test matches of all time, the win in Birmingham and the fight in Manchester can never ever be forgotten. In what was an intense series, you also need your moments of release. Moments when you can just laugh and unwind. And with my team around, you always have such moments.
Rohan: Prasidh Krishna is batting with Washington Sundar, who was smashing it on Day 3 of the Oval Test. Rohan, sitting next to me in the press box, told me: “Sir, he isn’t scoring, but he is Krishna. He has the Sudarshan Chakra and everything is ultimately his wish. He is making Washington score! That’s how powerful he is.”
I couldn’t believe what he was saying, and once it dawned on me, I just asked him to shut up! He is quite a character, Rohan, and I’m very pleased for him.
Debasis: The match had ended and Debasis, as always, was there to capture the visuals of the team leaving. Only, little did he know that two of the players would lift him up and start celebrating! He is much loved by everyone, and the video is viral.

Trisha: She is always fun to watch cricket with. One who understands and appreciates the sport. She was the one who was making rules in the press box, and even told Sunandan Lele, much senior to her, that he couldn’t take a bio break in the 57 minutes on the final day! Each time Sunandan left the press box, runs were being scored and Trisha wouldn’t permit that on the final morning. Well done, Trisha!
Sharmistha: Each time I said India would win or should win, Sharmistha would come down hard on me. “You said the same at Lord’s,” she told me. “Now, you will not say things and jinx it.” And once the final wicket fell, she was the first one to remind me that I had a live to do, so don’t shout too much and lose my voice!
Gargi: She is always watching her weight and counting calories. There have been occasions where we had to be stern with her and ask her to eat. The very same person, on Day 5, was binge-eating during the entire 57 minutes. Tim Wigmore, a Daily Telegraph journalist, had his tiffin box open and Gargi polished off all the cherries in no time. Tim, flabbergasted, finally told her, “India is picking wickets there, and you are picking on all the cherries here! What’s wrong with you?”
The backstage is as fascinating as what we witnessed in front of us, and some of these little moments will forever stay etched in our memories. We lived the series with you all. Engaged and argued, agreed and disagreed. That’s what sport allows us to do. In the end, we are all richer for the experience.
