Preetismita Bhoi, a 15-year-old from Odisha, became the first Indian to set a youth world weightlifting record with a clean & jerk lift of 76kg in winning three gold medals in the girls’ 40kg class competition in the 2024 IWF Youth World Weightlifting Championships at Lima in Peru on Wednesday. The previous world record was 75 kg.
With 57kg in snatch and a total of 133kg, Preetismita Bhoi dominated the event. “I am thrilled I set a world record. This is a dream come true, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of my coaches, family, and Indian Weightlifting Federation. I hope this inspires other young athletes to pursue their dreams with determination and hard work,” she said in a IWLF release.
Indian Weightlifting Federation President Sahdev Yadav praised her talent and work ethic. “Preetismita’s record-breaking lift is the result of her commitment and training. She is a true role model for aspiring weightlifters,” he said of Preetismita Bhoi who made five good lifts for 57-76-133 kg, finishing within 2kg of the youth world standard on total.
India added 3 silver and 5 Bronze medals on the opening day of the World Championships. Jyoshna Sabar (40kg) won two silver and a bronze medal while 14-year-old Payal (45kg) won a silver and two bronze. They both won the silver for total lifts of 125kg and 147kg respectively. Babulal Hembrom (49kg) won two Bronze medals in Youth Boys, including for the total lifts of 193kg.
The 2024 IWF Youth World Weightlifting Championships has brought together the best young weightlifters from around the globe, showcasing the future of the sport. Preetismita’s record-setting performance was a highlight of the event, drawing admiration and applause from spectators and fellow competitors alike.
