Once tagged as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Prithvi Shaw has found himself on the sidelines of the national setup. The 25-year-old, who made a dream Test debut in 2018 with a stunning 134, has since faced a sharp decline — missing not only India selection but also being dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji and Vijay Hazare squads. In a candid interview with News24, Shaw reflected on the mistakes and distractions that derailed his journey.
“There are a lot of things. It is different for people to see. Because I know what has happened. I can understand it. I have taken a lot of wrong decisions in life. I started giving less time to cricket,” said Shaw. “I admit that there was a distraction. I used to give 8 hours of practice on the ground. Now it is 4 hours.”
Shaw also revealed how his lifestyle and circle of friends during his peak years pulled him away from the game.
“After that, I started considering what was not necessary as necessary. I made some wrong friends… Then they took me here and there. All those things. Then I got away from the track.”
“I am on track now… I believe in myself.” – Prithvi Shaw
The opener also spoke about the emotional strain caused by personal losses. “I had a family problem. My grandfather had passed away. He was very dear to me… There are a lot of things that I can’t tell you. But I can feel it.”
Despite going through a low phase, Shaw shared that wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant stayed in touch — but said no other senior player reached out. “I am on track now… I believe in myself.”
Ending on a hopeful note, he shared a quote from his father, reflecting the road ahead: “Only Prithvi Shaw can bring himself back there. No one else can.”
