Prithvi Shaw’s cricket journey has taken a difficult turn, and Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad believes wrong choices played a big role in shaping his career. Shaw went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction after being released by Delhi Capitals. He was also recently dropped from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad for the 2024–25 season.
Lad, while speaking on a podcast with Gaurav Mangalani, remembered Shaw as a promising player and a teenage prodigy. “I have seen Prithvi since his childhood, from the time he was 10 years old,” he said. “He was a highly talented player. But as I have said, everyone’s journey is individual, and I don’t know what exactly happened with him. Still, Prithvi Shaw was a very talented cricketer. Unfortunately, he went down the wrong path and ended up spoiling his cricket.”
Shaw made his Test debut against the West Indies in Rajkot in 2018, and scored a century. Despite such a strong start, it’s been four years since his last appearance for India.
Lad compared Shaw to young talents in domestic cricket. “Even now, I feel there should be a batter like him, the way he used to bat,” he said. “Although right now we have some truly outstanding batters. For example, the way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is batting, and the way Ayush Mhatre is batting. These are future cricketers in the making. They are getting ready in line. Indian cricket is almost at the top.”
Shaw has now joined Maharashtra for the 2025–26 domestic season after ending his eight-year association with Mumbai.
