Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg haa said that reducing the Test calendar could help smaller nations, as the five-day format is at its best “where it means something” as he believes it is quality, not quantity, that will keep Test cricket alive.

“We’re trying to send countries bankrupt if we force them to try to play Test cricket,” Greenberg told reporters. “We need to make sure we invest in the right spaces to play Test cricket where it means something.”

The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between England and India, which ended in a 2-2 draw, was played in front of large crowds. Australia dominated the West Indies with a 3-0 series sweep in the Caribbean, while New Zealand’s away win over Zimbabwe reignited debates about the standard of Test cricket in these nations.

The CA CEO believes the upcoming Ashes, which will start in Australia in 100 days, will be a successful series as Test cricket is loved Down Under.

“That’s why the Ashes will be as enormous and as profitable as it is because it means something,” Greenberg remarked. “This will be the biggest sports event in Australia this year. The interest is quite extraordinary with ticket allocations for 11 of the 20 days on sale already exhausted.”

While one idea is to divide Test cricket into multiple tiers so that competitiveness remains intact, Greenberg admitted that he has no firm stance on the ideal number of countries that should play Test cricket.
