Sharmistha Gooptu at Lord’s
I woke up to a deluging and wet morning here in London, and when I reached Lord’s it was still a strong drizzle. By the time I was at the press box after completing the Live show around eleven past local time, my shoes and socks were soaking wet. There was gossip and chatter in the media box and English journalists talked over hot chocolate and cookies.
The ground of course is soaking wet with the ground staff coming in to sweep the water off the pitch covers. The rain never completely stopped, though the drizzle became less, and more-evident from officials inside the ground carrying umbrellas. Through the glass in the media box it appeared the rain might have stopped. Some football appeared on the giant screens for company.
The stands are empty where there is no shade, towards the rear there are people waiting patiently for the rain to go, which might be later in the afternoon as per prediction. When I came in, I saw lots of people getting food and drinks and sheltering under covered areas inside the stadium — clearly not able to go to their seats in the stands. Now as I wait for lunch — I’m very hungry as I’m sure the other journos here are as well — like match, the media lunch at Lord’s is delayed!
