Kumar Sangakkara, who was the Director of Cricket last season, will return as Head Coach of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the upcoming IPL season. He replaces Rahul Dravid, who has already parted ways with the franchise.
Sangakkara previously served as RR’s Head Coach from 2021 to 2024. As reported by Sportstar, RR had been considering Sangakkara for a return to the role. Under his guidance, the former Sri Lankan left-hander led RR to the IPL final in 2022. The franchise also qualified for the playoffs in 2024 under his leadership.
Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour and ex-New Zealand pacer Shane Bond will continue in their respective roles as batting coach and bowling coach.
With Sangakkara returning as Head Coach, the franchise must now decide on their captain, as reports suggest that current skipper Sanju Samson is unwilling to continue with the team.
This year, there will not be a major auction, so the franchise will need to make some important decisions as they look to bounce back strongly. Last season, they had a disappointing campaign, finishing ninth with just four wins from 14 matches. If Samson departs, the team will need to find an experienced batter to fill the void, as he has been a key pillar of their batting line-up for several years.
