An all-round effort from Maharashtra helped them secure six points with their win over Chandigarh. In the West, Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t inspire Saurashtra to victory as their game in Rajkot ended in a draw. The biggest highlight of the second round on Day 4 was the effort of the Nagaland batters to eke out a draw against Tamil Nadu.
Maharashtra vs Chandigarh
Maharashtra claimed their first win of the season by beating Chandigarh by 144 runs on the final day to get their first points on the board. Chandigarh needed 335 runs to win with nine wickets in hand and, despite Arjun Azad’s fighting fourth-innings hundred, the visitors fell short. Mukesh Choudhary and Ramkrishna Ghosh were the heroes for Maharashtra in their defence, as the pace duo shared eight wickets between them, four apiece.
Nagaland vs Tamil Nadu
Nagaland showed they are made of sterner stuff as they played out a draw at home with Tamil Nadu after a resolute display with the bat that took the game deep and denied the visitors a win. On a batting-friendly wicket in Dimapur, Tamil Nadu posted 512 in their first innings, courtesy of Pradosh Ranjan Paul’s double century.
In reply, the Nagaland batters displayed grit and resilience. After Gurjapneet Singh’s hat-trick reduced them to 9 for 3, Dega Nischal and Imliwati Letmur struck centuries to help Nagaland reach 446 in their first innings and spring a surprise. The R. Sai Kishore-led side took three points from the game but will feel they missed out on an outright win. Pradosh was adjudged Player of the Match, but in a brilliant gesture, he gave away the award and the prize money to Letmur.
Karnataka vs Goa
Karnataka took three points from the game after it ended in a draw, with Goa 143 for 1 in their second innings. The home side quickly wrapped up Goa’s first innings, taking four wickets in the first session. Soon after enforcing the follow-on, Karnataka picked up one wicket before lunch. A wicketless second session dented their chances of victory, and eventually, the players shook hands. Karun Nair was named Player of the Match for his 174 as Karnataka took three points.
Vidarbha vs Jharkhand
After Jharkhand scored 332 in their first innings, Vidarbha replied with 492, and that first-innings lead helped them secure three points as the game ended in a draw. It was a match marred by rain and bad light, which reduced it effectively to a two-innings contest, with Jharkhand batting for two days and Vidarbha for almost two. Young openers Aman Mokhade and Yash Rathod slammed fine centuries, with the former earning the Player of the Match award for top-scoring with 176. Jharkhand skipper Ishan Kishan used as many as eight bowling options in an attempt to deny the first-innings lead, but the defending champions once again showed why they are the team to beat at home.
Saurashtra vs Madhya Pradesh
In his comeback game, Ravindra Jadeja couldn’t deliver for his team with either bat or ball as Saurashtra played out a draw with Madhya Pradesh after the entire fourth day was washed out due to rain and poor ground conditions in Rajkot. Jadeja, who scored 36 in the first innings, went wicketless in the 28 overs he bowled. Centuries from Yash Dubey and Saransh Jain gave Madhya Pradesh the first-innings lead and, with it, three points.
Punjab vs Kerala
A valiant effort from the lower order wasn’t enough as Kerala were bowled out for 371 in their first innings, in response to Punjab’s 436. Having taken the first-innings lead, Punjab claimed three points from the game. Last season’s runners-up, Kerala, have now recorded two consecutive draws this season, both after conceding first-innings leads.
