Shardul Thakur has been named captain of the Mumbai team for the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, which begins on October 15. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed the appointment on September 26.
After Ajinkya Rahane stepped down from the role, speculation was rife about Shardul taking over, and the rumours gained further momentum after he was appointed captain of the West Zone side.
However, the official announcement was made following a meeting of the senior selection committee, led by Sanjay Patil. During the meeting, the list of probables for the upcoming season was finalised by the MCA. A 24-member squad has been released by the association. Sarfaraz Khan, who got injured during the Buchi Babu Trophy in Tamil Nadu, has been included. He was unavailable for selection during the home Test series against the West Indies but is likely to regain fitness before Mumbai’s first Ranji match against Jammu & Kashmir.
While announcing the probables list, the MCA clarified that players on national duty would be selected based on their availability.
“Players on national duty will be included as per their availability,” stated the official communication issued by MCA secretary Abhay Hadap and joint secretary Deepak Patil.
Familiar names such as Ayush Mhatre, Musheer Khan, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Siddhesh Lad, Suryansh Shedge, Tushar Deshpande, Shams Mulani, and Tanush Kotian have all been named in the squad.
