Afghanistan T20I captain Rashid Khan is focusing on finding the right balance ahead of next year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Rashid and co. had a forgettable run in the 2025 Asia Cup. Coming into the tournament with a lot of hope and expectations, Afghanistan couldn’t get past the group stage. Of the three matches played, they lost two — against Bangladesh and Pakistan. While things didn’t go as planned in the Asia Cup, Afghanistan’s focus is now on performing well in next year’s World Cup.
“I think every game is very competitive. It’s not as if we didn’t play competitive cricket in the Asia Cup. For us, each and every game is competitive. We’re not here just to have fun, enjoy, and then go back. We have a target, and that target is to become a perfect and balanced side for the next World Cup — that’s the mindset from now on,” Rashid told reporters ahead of the first T20I of the three-match series against Bangladesh, scheduled to be played on 2 October.
“We always play to win. Yes, we lost in the Asia Cup, which was something we had prepared for extensively, but that’s the nature of the game. You always learn from your mistakes, and this series is a good opportunity for us to come together and prepare well for the upcoming World Cup. The main focus is on how we can be at our best for the tournament,” he added.
In last year’s T20 World Cup, Afghanistan reached the semi-finals. With the next edition set to be played in subcontinental conditions, Afghanistan will be looking to replicate that success in the format that suits them best.
