Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has emphasized that players from opposing teams should avoid any form of physical contact on the field. His comments came ahead of Day 3 of the ongoing fifth Test at The Oval, following a moment involving India pacer Akash Deep and England opener Ben Duckett on Day 2.
The incident occurred when Akash Deep dismissed Duckett in the first session after the left-hander gave England a strong start with a brisk 43 off 38 balls. As Duckett began his walk back to the pavilion, Akash Deep—smiling—placed a hand around his shoulder and exchanged a few words. Duckett remained composed and showed no signs of frustration, but the gesture has since sparked debate, with many questioning whether it crossed a line.
Despite the lack of hostility, Akash Deep has come under scrutiny for the send-off.
“No physical contact,” Shastri told Sky Sports. “Because of what it can lead to. Duckett might’ve taken it lightly, but another player with a more fiery temperament might not have—and that could escalate into something regrettable. Millions are watching, and the match referee is obliged to act in such situations.”
The incident prompted intervention from KL Rahul, who pulled Akash Deep away. The moment has drawn attention to the ICC’s Code of Conduct, particularly Clause 2.12, which prohibits any form of inappropriate physical contact during an international match.
Although Akash Deep’s actions weren’t aggressive and the contact with Duckett was neither forceful nor confrontational, it still qualifies as a breach under ICC guidelines. As a result, Akash Deep could face demerit points.
