In the wake of the Chinnaswamy stampede tragedy, the BCCI has formed a three-member committee that will come up with standard celebration guidelines for the IPL franchises within a fortnight. The decision was taken at the cricket board’s 28th Apex Council meeting on Saturday. The committee will have BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia as its chair, alongside treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia and vice-president Rajeev Shukla.

On June 4, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory parade revelry had left 11 people dead and 56 injured outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium. While expressing shock and grief over the incident, the BCCI officials had spoken about how they didn’t have any control over private celebrations of an IPL franchise. Saikia, however, had dropped a hint that going ahead, the league’s governing body would seriously think about introducing celebration guidelines. The cricket board has walked the talk.

“The Apex Council expressed its profound grief over the tragic incidents in Ahmedabad (plane crash) and Bengaluru, which led to the unfortunate loss of innocent lives,” said the BCCI press release. It added: “In light of the incident that occurred during the victory celebrations in Bengaluru, the Apex Council has decided to constitute a committee to formulate comprehensive guidelines aimed at preventing such occurrences in the future. The committee will comprise: Mr Devajit Saikia (chairperson), Mr Prabhtej Singh Bhatia (and) Mr Rajeev Shukla. The committee will formulate the guidelines within 15 days.”

Meanwhile, the 2025-26 domestic season will commence with the Duleep Trophy (August 28) and conclude with the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy (April 3, 2026). The Duleep Trophy and Senior Women’s Challenger tournaments will be contested between six zonal teams selected by zonal selectors.
