After a season of embarrassing defeats – including four El Clasico losses to Barcelona – the Real Madrid overhaul continued with the decision to pay Dean Huijsen’s £50m release clause from Bournemouth. The Dutch-born centre-back, who’s just 20, will join Trent Alexander-Arnold and presumably several others as Xabi Alonso seeks to assemble a squad capable of once again winning the top honours.

Huijsen has enjoyed a stellar season with Bournemouth, scoring three goals and providing an assist as the south-coast club briefly threatened to claim one of the European places. Only Liverpool and Arsenal have conceded fewer goals than Bournemouth (43) in the English Premier League (EPL), and Huijsen’s accomplished displays have been a prime reason for that.

Dean Huijsen represented the Netherlands at age-group levels

With Antonio Rudiger injured and David Alaba well past his best, Real badly needed defensive reinforcements. Huijsen, signed from Juventus for an initial outlay of £12.6m will fetch Andoni Iraola’s team a whopping profit. The Amsterdam-born Huijsen represented the Netherlands at age-group levels but, after receiving Spanish citizenship last year, opted to play for Spain.

A host of EPL clubs including Liverpool, the champions, were interested in Huijsen, but the young star who came through the ranks at Malaga, couldn’t turn down the chance to be part of what is sure to be a major Real rebuild.
