England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed has expressed his desire to be part of the Ashes squad but also acknowledges that the final decision on selection lies with the selectors and team management.
The Ashes is still three months away, but discussions around squad selection have already begun. While England’s pace attack is more or less settled, the debate surrounding their spin-bowling options continues. Shoaib Bashir appears set for his maiden Ashes series, but the question remains: who will accompany him? Having taken 23 wickets in ten County Championship matches, along with scoring over 700 runs for Leicestershire, Ahmed has made a strong case for himself.
Although he hasn’t played in Australia, the spin-bowling all-rounder is looking forward to the opportunity to be part of such an incredible occasion if selected.
“I’ve never been to Australia, never played there. It looks a great place to play, and the Ashes is an incredible occasion. I’d love to be a part of it,” Rehan said in an interview with The Telegraph. “I know the management—if they pick me, they back me 100 per cent. If they don’t, it’s because they don’t think I’m the right man for the job there. I have full faith in their judgement. If you asked any man on the street if they wanted to play in the Ashes, they’d jump at the chance. If I don’t go, it’ll be a great watch.”
For his all-round brilliance in domestic cricket, Rehan has been rewarded by the selectors, having been picked in the white-ball squads for the series against South Africa and Ireland.
