The essence of sports is to remain dynamic and never stagnant. If it ever reaches a static point, it ceases to be a sport. Similarly, covering sports has to be just as dynamic, fast-paced and spontaneous. Just as many sports are played on a field, they should be covered on ground.
Sports journalism is the bridge between athletes and ardent sports fans who want to know what is happening on and off the field. Sports journalists are their ears and eyes. To give fans a sense of what is happening on the field, journalists must be present at the venues. It’s surprising how many media outlets in the country fail to grasp the concept.
I had encountered RevSportz long before I became a part of it. And every time I looked at the content, I was astonished at how RevSportz had people on the field, all the time. I was especially impressed with their coverage of the Asian Games – they were the first bearers of any news that came out of the event. After working in the sports journalism field for some time, I began to doubt my place on the circuit. I felt like just another cog in the wheel, burnt out by the same routine every day; the monotony of numbers and uniformity were wearing me down. Until I decided to give RevSportz a call.
When I first spoke to Boria Majumdar on the phone, I was surprised by how well he understood me, despite it being our first conversation. As I got to know him more, I was even more surprised at the kind of coverage he had envisioned for the platform. Having a young platform, a young team, diving into Olympic sports in a country that worships cricket, investing in young reporters to cover multi-sports events in different cities and countries. It was all astonishing.
In a country dominated by cricket-only channels and media houses that only cover athletes when they’re trending or involved in some controversy, RevSportz is a breath of fresh air. I am privileged to be a part of a platform that shares the same passion for sports that I do, starting from the very grassroots. The RevSportz Football Carnvial is a true testament of it. No other platform would bother starting a tournament at the grassroot level, especially some sport other than cricket. Being in the same rooms as my RevSportz colleagues, where ideas are conceived and strategies are developed, I consider myself fortunate to be part of the numerous game plans, blueprints and disruptions that RevSportz is planning.
