Rinku Singh scored a magnificent unbeaten ton in the ongoing Uttar Pradesh T20 League to silence his critics. Many fans were left surprised with his selection in the 15-member Team India squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. But he justified his selection with a match-winning century for his team, Meerut Mavericks.

While chasing the 168-run target, Meerut had a very poor start, but then Rinku stepped up and lit up the stadium. With Yuvraj Singh, Rinku put on an unbeaten partnership of 130 runs and finished the match with seven balls to spare. In the penultimate over, Rinku smashed 19 runs, including three back-to-back sixes. He scored an unbeaten 108 off just 48 balls at a blistering strike rate of 225. He hit seven boundaries and eight sixes to give his team a six-wicket victory.

Earlier, Gaur Gorakhpur Lions, led by Dhruv Jurel, put up 167 runs on the board, courtesy of the skipper’s 38 runs and Nishant Kushwah’s 37 runs. For Meerut, Vishal Chaudhary and Vijay Kumar took three wickets each.

However, when the Asia Cup squad for Team India was announced, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained why Rinku was included in the team. He said that they felt of adding an extra batter and hence, Rinku has been considered.

“For now, we felt we needed an extra batter in Rinku. And you could only pick 15” Agarkar concluded in the press conference.
