A road in Kasaragod, Kerala, will be named after Sunil Gavaskar on Friday. The legendary former India captain, who is here in Dubai for commentary duty in the Championship Trophy, would be attending the ceremony, organised by the Kasaragod municipality.

β€œI’m leaving tonight (after the game against Bangladesh). Will be back here on Saturday,” Gavaskar told RevSportz. About the road being named after him, he said: β€œIt’s a great honour. Wish I could drive on that road.”

The big game in the Champions Trophy, the India versus Pakistan match, is on Sunday.

Kasaragod is actually a football country. But the batting maestro, the first to score 10,000 runs in Tests, is a national treasure. Even at 75 years of age and 37 years after retiring from international cricket, he remains an icon to millions.

The road-naming ceremony would take place in his presence. After that, he would attend a grand ceremony at the Chettumkuzhi Royal Convention Centre.

Even away from home, Gavaskar still remains immensely popular. In 2017, he inaugurated a cricket field in Louisville in the United States that was named after him.
