Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa is excited to see how newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill will lead the Indian team forward.

“It will be interesting to see what kind of approach he takes to ODI cricket at the moment,” Uthappa said on his YouTube channel. “What norms or standards will Shubman Gill set for the ODI side? What brand of cricket do they want to play? I think there’ll be a slight adjustment, especially with Rohit at the top alongside Shubman.”

Recently, Gill was announced as the captain of the Indian ODI team for the three-match series in Australia, marking the end of Rohit Sharma’s tenure as skipper.

Rohit captained India in 56 ODIs, winning 42 of them, with a winning percentage of 75. He led India to the ICC Champions Trophy title earlier this year. In 2023, he guided the team to the final of the ODI World Cup, which they lost to Australia in Ahmedabad.

Uthappa further said he is excited about the upcoming series in Australia.

“It also gives Shubman the opportunity to get into that space and find himself, as far as being the captain in this format is concerned. So it’s going to be pretty interesting — I’m looking forward to that Australia series,” said Uthappa.

Gill had a brilliant start to his captaincy career, as his team made a superb comeback in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England to level the series 2–2.

The upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia will be Gill’s first official assignment as ODI captain.
