India’s former batter Robin Uthappa feels head coach Gautam Gambhir has not appreciated Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for their brilliant performances in the recent ODI series against South Africa.
Uthappa, who is the former teammate of Gambhir for India and KKR, said he was surprised by the coach’s comments after the match in Vizag. He said, “What I found surprising is the post-match of that series, in the press conference, I didn’t see Gautam giving credit to either Rohit or Virat,” Uthappa said on his YouTube channel.
He also highlighted how both Virat and Rohit dominated throughout the series. “Here are a couple of guys who’ve batted out of their skins and shown us how good they are and how good they can be. They reduced all kinds of doubts and shut down any naysayers about what they actually can do and will do for India when they are in the right kind of form. That felt strange,” Uthappa said.
Virat smashed back-to-back centuries and remained unbeaten on 65 runs in the series decider. He was the highest run-scorer with 302 runs and was also named the Player of the Series for his brilliant performance. Rohit, on the other hand, scored 146 runs in three innings and continues to rule at the No. 1 position in the ODI rankings.
After India sealed the South Africa series 2-1 in Vizag, Gambhir was asked about his plan for the 2027 ODI World Cup, including Rohit and Virat’s future in the team. He said, “First you’ve got to realise that the ODI World Cup is two years away. It’s important to stay in the present.”
