Rohan Bopanna, a name synonymous with tennis in almost every household in India, announced his retirement today, bringing an end to a sensational career that will be remembered for a long, long time. Fans last witnessed Bopanna in action at the Paris Masters 1000, where he partnered with Alexander Bublik.
Speaking about his retirement, Bopanna said, “How do you bid farewell to something that gave your life its meaning? After 20 unforgettable years on tour, it’s time… I’m officially hanging up my racquet. From chopping wood in Coorg to strengthen my serve, to standing under the lights of the biggest arenas in the world, it feels surreal. Representing India has been the greatest honour of my life, and every time I stepped on court, I played for that flag, that feeling, that pride.”
The end to his 22-year-long career has left many feeling bittersweet. At the beginning of 2025, Bopanna became the oldest man in tennis history to win a Grand Slam title and also the oldest World No. 1 doubles player. The two milestones stand as proof of Bopanna’s determination and the longevity of his career. He has represented India at the Olympic Games, and one of the most unforgettable memories for Indian fans will be when he partnered Sania Mirza at the 2016 Olympics, where they finished fourth after a heartbreaking semi-final loss. He has also been a part of the Indian Davis Cup team for over 20 years.
Although he has announced his retirement, his love for tennis remains unchanged. He continues to work on developing the sport at the grassroots level through his own academy, where he helps groom young players. He has also recently brought UTR Tennis Pro to India.
