Mumbai Indians (MI) fans had great expectations from their former captain Rohit Sharma in the big match—Eliminator against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Ahmedabad today, June 1, after his match-winning knock against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the last match. PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first. Rohit and Jonny Bairstow came out to open the innings for MI.
Rohit got a lifeline early when Omarzai dropped a catch while running backwards. Though it was a difficult chance, Omarzai made good ground to reach the ball but couldn’t hold on. Rohit immediately punished PBKS on the very next delivery he faced from Marcus Stoinis, playing a spectacular straight drive over the bowler’s head—a picturesque shot.

However, on the very next ball, Rohit attempted a pull shot off Stoinis and was caught by Vijaykumar Vyshak at deep square leg. Although Rohit and Bairstow gave MI a flying start in their previous match against GT, their partnership today was short-lived.
They could only add 19 runs from 14 balls before Rohit was dismissed. He scored eight runs off seven balls at a strike rate of 114.29, which included one boundary. His partner Bairstow, however, looked in fine form, smashing a quickfire 38 off 24 balls at a strike rate of 158.33, including three fours and two sixes. However, other batters came up with some significant and impactful performances as MI reached 203/6 in 20 overs.
